A "BIG" REPUTATION FOR BREATH TAKING BUILDINGS
The year was 1967, and in Ogden, Utah, Dee Livingood opened the doors of a company that would eventually become one of the nation’s largest and most admired construction firms: Big-D Construction.
The “D” was an abbreviation of his first name. The “Big” not only symbolized his physical stature, but also his character. Friends and associates would, indeed, agree that Dee was (quite literally) bigger than life when it came to his leadership style, work ethic, honesty attention to detail and passion for quality.
A COMPANY BASED ON RESPECT
Dee started with almost nothing – no business experience, no customers, and almost no money. All Dee had was a BIG-IDEA about the way things ought to be done. He wanted a company based on equal respect for customers and employees. A company based on truth. A company where there is no difference between what is said and what is done.
. . . THE IDEA GETS BIGGER
In 2001, Dee’s son, Jack Livingood would launch Big-D Signature.
Fueled by the Big-Idea outlined by Dee, over 50 years ago, Jack built a company to provide second-to-none services for resorts and private estate customers – those with discerning tastes and a penchant for perfection.
Because Big-D Signature shares an identical inclination to Big-D Construction’s culture, the result has been, dare we say, a dramatic success.
Dovetail Construction is the realization of a lifelong dream shared between two childhood friends. Tim Rote and Kevin Sullivan met in kindergarten where they bonded over dreams to live in the mountains and build. As adults, they both obtained degrees in engineering and construction management before pursuing separate projects across the country. They stayed in contact and eventually realized that their shared work ethic and approach to construction could be a solid foundation for a business—thus Dovetail was born.
Tim first met Mike Kerby—now, Sr. Vice President of Big-D Signature—while working on a large construction project in Hawaii. Tim eventually introduced Mike to Kevin, but again, they went their separate ways. The trio ultimately reconnected when Tim moved to Montana. In 2018, Tim, Kevin, and Mike decided to turn their ongoing friendship into a business partnership. The rest is history.
Today, Dovetail—backed by Big-D Signature’s global resources and industry expertise—maintains an outstanding reputation in Montana for both construction and community involvement.

At a young age, Tim became enamored with the personal reward that constructing things provides. After college, he enjoyed a successful career supervising and managing very large and complex projects in Boston, Hawaii, Alaska, and Seattle. Tim missed the personal connection and care that high-end residential homes involves and he helped establish Dovetail Construction in Bozeman, Montana. As a partner in the firm, Tim oversees the business and project management operations alongside his friend Kevin who he has known since they were 5.
