This week, Big-D Signature is joining construction firms across the nation in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction awareness campaign. The National Fall Prevention Stand-Down raises fall hazard awareness in an effort to prevent fall fatalities and injuries.
According to OSHA statistics, fatalities from falls continues to be a leading cause of death for construction employees. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 fatal falls in construction involve ladders. In many cases, these incidents could have been avoided.
HOW IT WORKS
A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event. It provides an opportunity for contractors to talk directly to employees and subcontractors about safety. During a break, an open discussion (or toolbox talk) is held to discuss safety measures and fall risks. The Safety Stand-Down may also include safety equipment inspections and developing rescue plans.
During Safety Stand-Downs this week, Big-D construction managers focused on equipment inspections, ladder safety, stairways and landings, hole covers and barriers, scaffold and personnel lifts, and excavations. Employees were also encourage to report any unsafe behaviors or equipment observed at job sites.
